Today, six varieties of grapes are cultivated in the territory of Armenia for the manufacture of His Majesty cognac. One of the most famous and beloved creations, of course, is the legendary “Ararat”. Armenian wine It is not a secret that the history of winemaking in Armenia has more than 4,000 years of history. Today, more than 600 varieties of grapes are cultivated in the legendary Ararat valley. An incredible variety of climatic zones and relief forms make a bouquet of alcoholic drink of Armenia, which has no analogues in the whole world! Over three hundred sunny days a year, the berries completely ripen, and wonderful examples of wine art are born. The collection of wine in Armenia varies from strong and light semi-sweet and “sherry” drinks to muscats, etc. Mulberry Oghi Mulberry Oghi, known as Tti Oghi, a drink from fermented mulberry juice with strength from 40% to 80%, is considered to be a pride in Armenia. But there is another unusual representative from the family of alcoholic beverages in the country - abrikon. This is a 44% alcohol product made from apricots grown in the Ararat valley. According to the production technology, the drink is similar to brandy. If you are in Armenia, be sure to try this delicacy and buy a bottle as a luxurious souvenir. Have a nice trip! As spring arrives in Armenia, the first major holiday is around the corner. Armenia is one of the many countries that celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th. Marked as a public holiday, this is a non-working day in the country. WHY IS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY IMPORTANT? March 8th is of crucial importance to celebrate women’s rights and their role in society. It was first highlighted back in 1910 and later adopted by the United Nations in 1975 as International Women’s Day. Though still not so popular in some countries, March 8th is a big deal for Armenians. HOW DO ARMENIANS CELEBRATE MARCH 8? As the holiday marks the beginning of spring and freshness, March 8 is often associated with beauty, femininity, and flowers. On this day, women particularly receive attention from their male partners, family members, friends, coworkers, and even strangers. If you are in the capital on March 8th, you will see young boys handing out flowers to women and girls on the streets, as part of the celebration activities organized by Yerevan Municipality. Sometimes, the municipalities also organize concerts or live performances on the streets. Companies organize corporate gatherings, pubs and cafes organize parties and events, and restaurants are almost always fully booked. It has also recently become a tradition for many women’s rights organizations and active groups to organize a march on this day. With this, they highlight the real purpose of the holiday - recognizing women’s rights and how far they have come throughout history. WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT MARCH 8TH IN ARMENIA? While the rest of the world marks only one day, Armenia celebrates a whole month dedicated to women! March 8th sets the beginning and the month concludes with celebrations on April 7th, which is the day of Motherhood and Beauty. While March 8th is for all women, April 7th is particularly about showing appreciation to our mothers. Start the beginning of spring with flowers, beauty, and elegance. March 8th is around the corner and so are the big celebrations. This year, make the International Women’s Day memorable by visiting Armenia. At Caucasus Holidays, we will be sure to make it extra special for you!

Even though the capital Yerevan is the most populous place in Armenia with many attractions, Armenia has a lot more to offer. From the center of culture to the home of many churches, here are the 5 must go cities in Armenia that are outside the capital. 1. GYUMRI Often called Armenia’s capital for arts and crafts, the second largest city of the country is well known for its poets, artists and craftsmen, who have left a huge cultural heritage to Gyumri. The city has a street called Varpetats poghoc (street of masters), where the homes of many famous poets and artists have turned into fascinating museums. The city has also not lost touch with its history - many famous sights where old Soviet movies have been shot are still preserved, along with the ancient but still inhabited houses that go as far as 1900s. If you are a tea lover, be sure to stop by Tea and Honey. Along with healthy and delicious food, this place is hands down the best teahouse in the country. And, if you are into a menu that is primarily based on fish options, you have to visit Cherkezi Dzor - one of the very first fish restaurants in the country. With different variations of dishes such as fish kebab, barbeque and many more, Cherkezi Dzor is a great place for a friendly mingle or a family get together event. 2. YEGHEGNADZOR Located in the breathtaking Vayots Dzor region, Yeghegnadzor landscape is nothing like what you’ll experience in any other part of the country. The very unique rocks and caves of the area contain a huge history inside them, including the world’s oldest shoe found in a cave right outside Yeghegnadzor. It also provides the perfect conditions for a roadtrip to explore the nature of the countryside. The region is famous for its winemaking, so check out Old Bridge Winery for an amazing wine tasting experience and a winery tour. If you have spare time in your hands, make sure to visit some of the other famous wineries outside the city as well, located in Areni. The area is also the perfect opportunity to pay a visit for several monasteries and old historic museums, such as Noravank, and Vayots Dzor History Museum in Yeghegnadzor itself. 3. DILIJAN Often referred as the Little Switzerland of Armenia, Dilijan has to offer a lot to its visitors. Starting from the many hiking trails inside and outside the city, to hosting the Armenian branch of international United World Colleges, the city has many attractions. Inside the city is Sharambeyan street that combines the old buildings with a modernized touch of vintage. Located in the beautiful Tavush region, every part of Dilijan is covered in trees and mountains. Check out the National Park of the city, and if you are into nature, go to Parz Lake - the views are indescribable. Tip: the restaurants in Dilijan are some of the best food you will eat in the country. Be sure to try Kchuch, Tava, Flying Ostrich or anything else, really. They are all amazing! 4. EJMIATSIN Located just outside Yerevan, Ejmiatsin is the city to go if you are interested in a spiritual tour of churches. Armenians are the first nation to adopt Christianity back in 301 AD and the country still has churches in every corner you can possibly imagine. Ejmiatsin is the religious capital of the country: that is where the Catholicos is seated, and the Mother See of Holy Ejmiatsin, along with an educational center for future church servants. The city also has other churches, such as St Hripsime, St Gayane and St Shoghakat. And though these many churches may seem a lot for such a small city, trust us, they are all worth visiting. 5. GORIS Located in the biggest region of the country, Syunik, Goris is a whole other story. The nature is completely different from what you would typically see in other parts of the country and rocks and mountains will follow anywhere in the city. Goris is the place to go, if you are looking to dig more into natural heritage. Be sure to visit The Medieval Goris Cave Dwellings, walk through steep stairs and explore what has been inhabited up until the 20th century. Even more so, check out Goris Rock Forest, which is another unusual sight of the city, with a marked trail for hikers. Tip: Goris is a great getaway to also visit the nearby famous Tatev Monastery. For such a small country, Armenia has cities and landscapes that are completely unlike each other. So, depending on your taste, pick the region, pick the city and enjoy exploring the heritage of the country. Book your tour with Caucasus Holidays now!

If you are in Armenia, it is very likely that people will invite you to their household. This is an accepted tradition because Armenians love to talk to others and tell them about their homeland. So, what should you know if you are guest in an Armenian family? YOU ARE MORE THAN A GUEST IN ARMENIAN FAMILY Armenians are extremely hospitable. So, if they invite you over, they perceive you as family, even if you may not meet again another time. Armenians will treat you as family too - they will do their best to make you feel at home and will not take any hesitation from your side. THERE WILL BE FOOD AND A LOT OF IT Whenever Armenians have someone over in their house, all of a sudden, in several minutes, they create this magical meal table, full of all sorts of delicious food. It is like they are always aware of their upcoming guests! If you are at someone’s house as a guest especially in the regions, every dish is homemade, with organic ingredients, and trust us...there is nothing you will not want to try and taste. AND YOU CAN’T SAY “NO”, IF THEY OFFER YOU MORE FOOD The thing about Armenians is that because they take their guest as family, they are constantly worried about them being hungry. That is why they will regularly make sure that you are eating and you actually like the food that is on the table. So, they will fill your plate with more food for you to try! And let’s face it - Armenian food is too delicious for you to even attempt to say no. THERE WILL BE TOASTS AND TOO MANY OF THEM If there is food, there will also be all sorts of drinks. And with drinks, come a lot of toasts. Armenians really value family. They make a toast, when they sit down at the table to greet each other, they make a toast to honor their parents, their kids, their aunts and uncles. They will make a toast to honor you - their guest! If you are feeling brave, make your own toast and thank the hosts for the warm welcome. DRINKING COFFEE AFTER A MEAL IS A WHOLE RITUAL Armenian coffee comes in a very small cup but along with the coffee come way too many desserts and conversations. It is very common for Armenians to have a cup of coffee (or two) at their household every day, and sometimes if they want to have fun, they might try and guess your fortune with the shapes left in the cup from your coffee. IF THERE IS MUSIC, YOU HAVE TO DANCE After the food and dessert is done, it is very likely your hosts may want to play Armenian music and dance with you. Don’t be shy! Even if you have never heard Armenian music, or don’t know how to dance, just join the group and they will teach you. Armenians love their culture and are proud of their music and dances - so as a tourist you are absolutely encouraged to give it a try! YOU WILL BE ASKED A LOT OF QUESTIONS We understand, you may not like to be asked too many questions. But let’s face it - this is Armenia we are talking about. People are curious, so as a way to show affection and being close to you, they will ask you a lot of questions. They will ask about your country, what made you come to Armenia, what you do back home and more. AND YOU SHOULD BE PREPARED TO ANSWER ALL OF THEM They don’t just let these questions go - they are genuinely interested in your answers! So, take it as a good sign. They are invested to learn more about you and who you are. Though things are changing now, Armenia is still very much so a monoethnic country - so, a lot of people may not have been exposed to other cultures and you might be their first interaction with the country and heritage you come from. YOU WILL BE ASKED IF YOU LIKE ARMENIA The most common question of all is people are curious to hear others talk about Armenia and their impressions of it. So, be prepared to be asked this question many many times. AND YOU WILL FIGURE OUT THE ANSWER BY YOURSELF We won’t tell you what to answer to this question because we want you to experience the country and form your own opinions. Then you will have the answer for yourself! Armenia is a country of nice people with big and warm hearts who will do everything to make your trip as special as possible, even just contributing by inviting you to their house. Make your once in a lifetime trip with Caucasus Holidays now!

WHY POMEGRANATE SYMBOL IS SO FAMOUS IN ARMENIA? If you ask Armenians what are some of the country’s famous symbols, pomegranate will definitely be on the list. It has been involved in Armenia’s history line for so many aspects: mythology, art, food, drinks and so much more. So, what is it that makes pomegranate so special for Armenia? MYTHOLOGY Besides being delicious just by itself (we’ll get to the food and drink part later), pomegranate represents fertility and prosperity. Historically, the newlyweds were given a scattered pomegranate to have many children during their lives together. The fruit is also famous in other aspects of Armenian mythology. It is said that the pomegranate contains 365-366 seeds which are equivalent to the days of the year. Hence, the fruit is celebrated as a symbol of life. Because of its health benefits, it is also believed that pomegranate keeps us out from the evil spirits. ART Perhaps the most famous movie with the pomegranate is Sergey Parajanov’s masterpiece “The Color of Pomegranate”, displaying Armenia’s undefeatable soul. The fruit can be seen in countless paintings of famous Armenian artists. It is a muse for many until this day. One famous work is by a beloved artist Martiros Saryan who showed this symbolic fruit in his famous painting “Under Pomegranate Tree”. Armenian Manuscripts dating back to sixth or seventh century contained pomegranate in their illustrations for religious connotations of Christianity and the blood of Christ. To this day, pomegranates can be found anywhere in Armenian markets in any form: necklace, painting, house souvenir, ceramics, and so much more. Even the official logo of the State Tourism Committee in Armenia contains pomegranate in it – so the fruit is basically our symbol for promoting tourism of the country. FOOD AND WINE In the sense of the actual usage of the fruit, Armenians love to use it in different recipes, cut and eat it just by itself, or make wine out of it! It is believed to have many advantages for health so it is very common to see pomegranate on the table in Armenian households. It is a long and time consuming process to cut the fruit and separate the seeds but it is something the whole family gets excited about, especially children. The fruit is used in many salads and main dishes both as a decoration and an ingredient. The shells don’t go to waste either - they are considered to be great remedy when mixed with other ingredients. And finally, besides eating the fruit, Armenians have also found the way to make wine out of it. Semi Sweet pomegranate wine is a hit in Armenia, so be sure to give it a try when you are around. This wonderful fruit along with many known health benefits, in Armenian culture, shows strength, life and prosperity. Being a muse for so many Armenian artists to this day, pomegranate can be found in any artform in Sunday markets, if you are looking for the perfect Armenian souvenir. Discover the many stories of this famous symbol of the country with Caucasus Holidays!

Yerevan is a fantastic city full of attractions, so it is rather difficult to choose the must-visit places. Here are some of the sightseeing situated in the centre of Yerevan! Vernissage Yerevan’s Flea Market is probably one of the best open-air markets in the world. It is called Vernissage (varnishing, from French) — a term used for a preview of an art exhibition. A visit to the market could be a full day excursion on a beautiful weekend day where you will find everything from traditional Armenian jewellery, souvenirs, handicrafts to many other items for sale. The Vernissage is the right place to get little taste of Armenia and a special spot to witness the fusion between national traditions and modern taste. Vernissage is held behind Republic Square metro on Nalbandyan street, selling everything under the sun. The Republic Square of Yerevan If you are going to visit Armenia and its ancient capital Yerevan, then you should definitely visit the Republic Square, which is located in the centre of Yerevan and is considered one of the most amazing and famous places of the capital. Also called “the heart of Yerevan,” it is a favourite destination for tourists. The construction of the square was performed by the main Armenian architect Alexander Tamanyan in 1924 and developed until 1958. The Republic Square is situated in the centre of the city, near Abovyan, Amiryan, Nalbandyan, Tigran Mets, Vazgen Sargsyan streets. You can get there by bus, by a minibus or you can use an underground and get off at the station “The Republic Square”. Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral The St Gregory Armenian Church, also known as Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral is located in the centre of Yerevan. It is the largest Armenian apostolic church not only in Armenia but also in the world. Except for being magnificent and fascinating it also has a very interesting history. The Cathedral, The St Gregory Armenian Church, or Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral, is named in the honour of St Gregory the Illuminator, who helped the Armenian nation to convert Christianity and became the first Catholicos of Armenia. Where to stay in Yerevan? While planning to stay in Yerevan you should consider some factors such as the sightseeing near it. So if you want to be near above-mentioned sights of attraction, then welcome to Messier53 hotel, which is situated right in the heart of Yerevan – in front of Vernissage open-air market.
