Do you know that there is also an umbrella street in Armenia? It's not in the capital of Armenia - Yerevan, but in town Talin. Talin is that very town where you can find umbrella sky in the street. About Talin, Armenia Talin town is located 66 kilometres from the capital of Armenia, Yerevan, in the Aragatsotn region. 18 kilometres from the city you can find the railway station Karmrashen. Talin is considered to be one of the oldest settlements in Armenia. The first mention refers to the 1-2 century. Talin was the centre of the Armenian principality in 5-7 centuries. Many architectural monuments of the early Middle Ages are preserved here, including the Katoghike temple. The founder of the temple is Nerses Kamsarakan, who is known as the “Church Builder”. In 1930, Talin district was formed, the centre of which was the urban-type settlement Verin Talin (as Talin was originally called). In 1995, after Armenia moved to a new administrative division, the district was abolished. In the 70s, a butter factory, an asphalt concrete plant, household electrical appliance plants, a branch of a knitting factory, a folk theatre, and an incubator station worked in Talin. Talin sightseeing The most interesting places in the city are the Small Church and the Big Temple (cathedral church). Small Church, which is located in the centre of Talin, has been known since the second half of the 7th century. It was built by prince Nersekh Kamsarakan. Residents of Armenia and the numerous Armenian diaspora celebrate public holiday May 9 not only as of the victory in World War II but also as the day of the liberation of Shushi and the formation of the Defense Army. The Armenian people who survived the genocide have repeatedly shown their courage to the world. And Victory Day has become a real triple holiday of Armenian strength. Victory Day in Armenia First of all, as in many countries of the former Soviet Union, Armenia celebrates victory in World War II. About 600 thousand sons of the Armenian people fought on the battlefield against the fascists: about 300 thousand from Armenia, another 200 thousand from other former Soviet republics, another 100 thousand Armenian diasporas fought as part of the allied forces. About 300 thousand of them died in the battles. Shushi Liberation day in Armenia The heirs of the great victory continued the glorious traditions of their fathers and grandfathers, showing no less heroism during the years of the Karabakh war. It is on May 9 that the liberation of Shushi is marked. Besides that, the formation of the Army of Defense is also celebrated on this day. The operation to liberate the city was called "Wedding in the Mountains" and was unique from the point of view of military science. The operation was named so by the then Minister of Defense of Armenia Vazgen Sargsyan. When the commanders who led the operation presented a battle plan for the capture of the city, Sargsyan said that the plan of the military responsible for the operation could not be realized - it seemed too impudent. Then he declared that if the plan could be realized, then after the capture of the city, he would certainly marry. By the way, the minister remained a bachelor until the end of his days. Visit Armenia during May holidays and make sure to participate in the amazing festivals and events!

For such a small country, Armenia has countless examples of breathtaking architecture, each distinctive and different from one another. The country has been around since the beginning of time, and it is fascinating to see the changes in Armenian architecture throughout the centuries. Welcome to the wonderful mix of the old and the new! ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE Armenian ancient architecture goes back to as far as 9th century BC to the Urartian period. The buildings from this era are mostly ruined but have remains as tourist attractions. The only architecture piece standing strong is the Garni pagan temple (the dominant view is that it was built in 77 AD) which has gone through major reconstruction. From the outside, the buildings looked rich and almost perfectly built. Inside, the decorations were the main pillar of the buildings. As this historical time is on the same era as the bloom of Greco Roman architecture, many of the architecture pieces were influenced by their style. However, as Armenians adopted Christianity in 301 AC, the new churches brought with them a breath of fresh air. MEDIEVAL CHURCHES The new medieval churches became more distinctive in their structure. Many of the churches had pointed domes, as in the volcanic cone of the Greater Ararat. Some of them had semi-pointed domes that are also clearly concentrated more on the height than the length of the church, so the it is usually exceeding the length. The windows are very much narrow and tall, and the main material to build these churches are basalt and tuff. Carvings on Armenian churches are just beautiful - they are usually sentences, or ornates, such as grapevine and foliage. A great showcase example of a medieval church is the Ejmiatsin Cathedral. The biggest and the main center of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the cathedral is considered to be a masterpiece not just for Armenian architecture, but it glows among others in the world. It was originally believed to have been built in the 4th century, then renovated and modified in the 17th and lastly undergone some changes in the nineteenth century. So, it collects the influence of many time periods in the Armenian architecture, just like many other churches do in the country. MODERN DAY CHURCHES Nowadays, the churches of Armenia have mainly adopted what was initially built in the medieval times, with slight touches of modern architecture influence. Check out the Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Yerevan. This huge building consists of the Main Church, two chapels, and a belfry tower. Just like many of the churches in the country, it is built on a high altitude, proudly looking down the city from high above. Whether you are visiting Armenia for museums, for churches or even just nature, the country will impress with its ancient style buildings and their influence on the modern day architecture. The country’s unique history defines the mesmerizing cathedrals and monasteries it has to offer in every corner. Feel the spirit of the old and the modern - book your tour with us at Caucasus Holidays!

Armenia is a land full of symbols and interesting facts. It was impossible to speak about all the symbols in one article, so here is the continuation of the Armenian symbols. 6. Mount Ararat Mount Ararat, images of which are found everywhere - from the coat of arms of Armenia to the clothing of the country's national football team, is one of the most recognizable symbols of Armenian culture. This is the place on which, according to the Bible, Noah's Ark landed. The double top of Mount Ararat is an integral part of everything Armenian. The mountain consists of two mountains merged by the bases: Masis and Sis, which are also called Big and Small Ararat. 7. Pomegranate The symbol of fertility, prosperity and good luck, possessing the unique taste of pomegranate is used as a sign of Armenian culture everywhere - from handicrafts to works of art. The colour of the pomegranate resembles blood and vitality, and the grains are a symbol of procreation. The symbolism of a pomegranate is due, firstly, to its colour, and secondly, to its shape, and thirdly, its internal structure, which embodies the principle of unity and integrity. In recent decades, the grenade is considered to be a symbol of the Armenian diaspora scattered throughout the world. Also, let’s not forget about the film of the famous director Sergei Parajanov “Sayat-Nova” about the great Armenian poet: it was called “The colour of the Pomegranate”, emphasizing the most symbolic concept for Armenians. 8. Cognac Cognac production in Armenia was founded in 1887 by the first guild merchant Nerses Tairyan. On the territory of the former Erivan fortress, he built the first wine and vodka factory. Brandy production has become the most advanced sector of the Armenian economy. 9. Apricot Apricot - is another symbol of Armenia. This fruit was selected by Armenian farmers long before our era, then the merchants brought it to Rome, where it became widespread and continued its journey through the countries of Europe. The apricot tree serves as a source of wood for the most beloved and famous Armenian musical instrument called duduk. If you did not know, then the orange colour on the national flag of Armenia symbolizes apricot. 10. Duduk Duduk is a wooden musical instrument. It is a tube with 9 holes. Variants of this instrument are common among the peoples of the Caucasus, the Middle East and the Balkan Peninsula. In 2005, the music of the Armenian duduk was recognized as a masterpiece of UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage. In Armenia, duduk is also known as “tsiranapokh”, which literally can be translated as “apricot tube” or “soul of an apricot tree”. Read also the first part of the article. Gardman Tour, 02.04.201
